On-Board Inert Gas Generation System (OBIGGS) Climatic Test Chamber For the Aerospace Industry

The risk of aircraft fuel tank explosions is caused by something known as the ‘fire triangle’, which consists of three separate elements: fuel, ignition and oxygen. To prevent a fire from breaking out, one of these elements must be removed.

On-board inert gas generation (OBIGGS) systems were developed to improve safety and reduce the risk of in-flight explosions, even if a spark is present, and is now mandatory for most types of military and commercial aircraft. This is accomplished by generating nitrogen enriched air (NEA) in the fuel tank space in order to replace the oxygen that is present, preventing an explosion from occurring.
