See Our Plant Growth Chamber in Action at the Science Museum’s Future of Food Exhibition

As part of the Science Museum’s Future of Food exhibition, our plant growth chamber is helping bring cutting-edge crop research to life for visitors.

We’re pleased to be part of a major free exhibition at the Science Museum in London, Future of Food. The exhibition examines how science can help us find more sustainable ways to grow, product and eat food, and features a Weiss Technik UK plant growth chamber that can be used to cultivate engineered plants.

Future of Food features over 100 historic and contemporary objects that highlight major food milestones, including 3,500 year-old fermented sourdough bread, the first Quorn burger and the first beef steak grown outside a cow.

The exhibition offers a fascinating look at the hidden stories behind the foods we eat every day. From innovative meal solutions to community cooking initiatives, Future of Food highlights how our daily choices, what we buy, cook and consume, can influence more sustainable ways of producing food. Visitors will discover inspiring stories of farmers, scientists and community leaders from around the world, and gain insight into how our current food systems affect the environment, society and the planet.

Part of this exploration include the Weiss Technik Fitotron SGC120 Plant Growth Chamber, currently used by scientists at NIAB to study potato and wheat plants under controlled conditions. The chamber provides a high degree of flexibility, allowing researchers to precisely control temperature, light, humidity and other environmental factors to simulate different growing conditions. Plant growth chamber demonstrates how technology and nature can work together to shape the future of food

By replicating a wide range of climates and seasonal cycles, the chamber enables scientists to investigate how crops respond to stress, disease, and changing environmental conditions. This research is crucial for developing climate-resilient crops and engineered plants that can thrive with fewer resources, helping to ensure food security in a changing world.

Visitors to Future of Food can see how tools like the Fitotron plant growth chamber are bringing together technology and biology to explore innovative ways of growing food more sustainably. It’s a clear example of how scientific advances in plant research can directly contribute to a more sustainable and resilient food system - one that balances human needs with the health of our planet.

We’re proud to be part of such an inspiring exhibition and hope it sparks curiosity about the food we eat every day and the journey it takes from farm to plate. Future of Food is a free exhibition open daily until 1 September 2026, so if you’re visiting London this year, it’s an experience not to be missed!
